Restoring a resin casted DL-44 blaster prop according to the Starwar Movie – A New Hope (Hans Solo)

This is a brief article detailing my commissioned work and air-brushing endeavour to help a collector restore his old resin casted (display only) prop back to mint condition.

The main challenge was to restore the surfaces and spray on the more ideal material colours despite the prop blaster is casted solid as a solid unit and couldn’t be taken apart to mask and spray individually in parts. However with research and patience i was able to tackle and deliver it according to the client’s brief.

  • Research thoroughly and read the hobbyist forums for all history and details of the prop
    – Remove dirt with only cleaning purposes felt cloth
    – No harsh chemicals
    – Firm handling
    – Test and mix colours by trial
    – Ensure zero dust and wind when air-brushing

The skills i learnt and employed here:
Patience | Research | Prop Restoring | Handling Resin Material | Priming Resin |  Weathering Technics | Tricky Masking

The tools:
Paint Brush |  Hobby Grade Acrylic Paint | Sand paper |Hobby Grade Priming Paint | Hobby Grade Matt Surface Paint | Wood Patty | Enamel Paint | Hobby Grade Glue | Air Brush Gun | Air Brush Compressor | Hobby Grade Rub/Buff Surface Colouring

*Important Note*
The custom/restoring works are mainly meant and used for indoor display and personal collection only and I try our best to demarcate with bright coloured parts (Trigger or muzzle parts. etc) to differentiate and prevent any confusion with actual firearms / weapons for projects that aren’t collector items and as a prudence, I do not take on uncertain blaster related jobs that are not referred by my close friends or associates.

No full black and deliberate real-world gun / weapon simulating paints jobs will be entertained due to the law on firearms in our country. I also do not encourage any blasters that don’t look like toys be brought to the public.
